On Thursday, August 9, 2018, at approximately 5:10am, officers responded to the 1200 block of Amelia Street in reference to a subject laying in the street.
Upon arrival officers located a black female, who was identified by an officer from a prior investigation, as Traniel Gray, DOB 09/19/1992, with 29 stab wounds to her chest along with an infant child laying on the ground crying next to the victim.
The child, who did not appear injured, was transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. Department of Family Services was notified and they are tending to the child. The child was not injured.
Early in the investigation through interviews and crime cameras in the area, members of the Patrol Division and Criminal Investigations Division were able to develop a possible suspect, Damone Ussin, black male, DOB 10/23/1976, whose last known address was 519 Hamilton Street, Gretna.
Members of the Criminal Investigations Division and the Westbank Major Crime Task Force continued through the day following up leads. At approximately 11:00pm, through technology, members of the Criminal Investigations Division, the Westbank Major Crime Task Force, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, a search warrant was executed in the 800 block of 5th Avenue in Harvey.
Ussin was located at this location where he was arrested for 2nd Degree Murder and as a result of this incident, Battery on a Dating Partner on a warrant, which the Gretna Police Department issued in July for an incident in which Gray was also the victim. Officers were also able to locate evidence that links Ussin to the homicide.
Ussin has previous arrest for aggravated battery, several narcotic violations, several simple battery charges, along with numerous other misdemeanor charges.
